6Y6GT in a Champ ?

While browsing ebay for some NOS tubes, I found one vendor selling 6Y6GT as direct replacement LOW POWER 6V6GT. The vendor claims this "These can be used in smaller AMPs like the champ, and practice Amps, where lower Plate voltages are used." I googled 6Y6GT and found this spec. sheet.6Y6GT Specs. According to this sheet the 6Y6GT's are good up to 200v on the plate. A Champ runs about 350v on the plate as far as I know? Seems I may have answered my own question here? But I figured I'd put it out for discussion any way.

I haven't seen any Champs that have less then 375 to 400vdc on their plates.
You could very easily make a power supply change though.
Buy a choke, 5Hy 100ma.
Stick the choke in series with the wire from the rectifier tube to the first filter cap... that will hold the DC voltage down to about 90% of the rectifier output voltage.
Its a rough estimate because the drop across the rectifier tube.
IOW...
if the hi-v secondary is 340-350vac and you had two solid state diodes feeding the B+ to that choke, you'd get about +300-310vdc at the end of the choke and on the first filter cap. Less with a real NOS tube rectifier like a 5Y3GT.
From that point on is where you'd connect everything to your B+ rail, such as your output transformer.

Thanks for your response Bruce. So if I understand Your post correctly ? With out modding/knocking down the B+ these 6Y6GT tubes would fry in a stock Champ? As long as there is a supply of NOS 6V6GT's available, It is pointless to use a 6Y6 for this application. Correct?

Note how the 6Y6 draws a TON of plate current even at low screen voltages. You'll almost certainly need to use a higher-value cathode resistor to keep the tube from smoking itself.

Let us know how it works out for you. I've got a handful of working 6Y6s, and no TVs to use them in!

P.S. Hmm, just drew some load-lines. At 150V plate and screen, a pair of these into a 2K load might work pretty well.

I recently aquired a couple new-looking 6Y6GT's and popped one into a Champ clone. Right away I had a cherry-red plate and really nasty distorted sound - not a good distortion, either! I bet it would be a great tube if you ran lower plate voltage and properly designed the amp around it. However, I don't know how readily available 6Y6's are, so it might be a waste of a good design. Sounds like there are a few of us out there with stashes, though.
