I've got myself some 6sl7's to try out so I'm going to mod my experimenter amp to accept these rather than 12a*7... I also ended up with some 12sl7's - can the 12v filament be run on a 6v supply? I understand that these tubes are a bit different than 12a*7 types - no filament tap... what are the limiting factors running a 12v filament tube on a 6v supply - runaway current consumption or something?

is this thing on??? this is really more for curiosity's sake... if I run a 12 volt filament tube in a 6 volt filament supply, what would happen or not happen?
I could easily use these in another project with a PT w/12v supply... but... I'm curious. The only info I could find out there on this topic was "don't do it" but with no explanation...

I'll take a wild guess and say low emission from the cathode. You won't have enough electrons free in the tube to conduct.

That makes sense... tube doesn't heat up, the "valve" doesn't open - so it would either sound like scat or not at all... would this state have an effect on the PT?

The filament *may* glow a little, but you're likely to hear nothing.
