  • replacing 6w8's with separate pre and output tubes

Hey everyone - thanks for reading. I've posted this in Conversions, but it is really just a tube question.

I've got a Hammond H-AO-44-3 Reverb amp that is missing the 6gw8's.
I'm not inclined to replace them as the tubes are becoming more expensive daily.
However, I'm considering swapping some sockets, drilling new ones, and essentially just using the chassis and transformer, and maybe the original 6CA4/EZ81 rectifier.

Before I do this, however, I'd like someone that is more "fresh" on their knowledge to review my idea and see if it would work. Mainly, I'm just trying to determine workable tube swaps for the 6gw8's.

    Original:
    6gw8 x 2
    6CA4 x 1

    Proposed:
    5879 x 1 (I love a gibson GA-40)
    12ax7 x 1
    6AQ5 x 2
    6CA4 x 1

From looking through datasheets, it looks like I'll potentially draw a touch more heater current than the original - 2.35 vs 2.32 stock. But that seems negligible as tubes seem to vary anyway. I'm a bit more concerned to be sure that I have enough DC current available. However, from what I can glean, it appears it should work. Anyone see anything I'm missing?

    Thanks for your time,
    Jeff
