How do I mod my muff for more sustain?

It's a black muff--

I know the diode feedback stage is what creates this... should I start with this and experiment? or do any of you know mods that have been done?

can I just add a feedback stage, before the buffer stage?

The simplest thing to do is to use a compressor pedal ahead of it.

I put a Maxon compressor in front of a Muff Triangle, and it really beefs up the sound. The thing I noticed though is that some of that "dirty fuzz" sound gets washed out (for want of a better description).

That's because the compressor is keeping the peak as well as the average signal level in check.

The compressor flattens out the overall signal response, so you don't get so much of the peaks and troughs, right? It would be nice to keep that fuzziness, which gives the Muff its own character.
I really like my Maxon (the original batch of CP101's, not the reissues), but it's still not as transparent as I hoped it would be. What I mean is that a lot of the high end seems to get boosted, which to me sounds a little piercing.

One can often, though not always, find a sweet spot in the compression amount control, that permits enough volume constancy to yield a more predictable and smoother distortion, while still permitting a bit of pick attack.
