  • Big muff no guts?

I recently bought a big muff PI and (at a performance level volume i.e. a gig at a pub) the volume difference between when i have my clean bass sound and when the pedal is on is very different, this is when i have the muff turned up full ball! i.e. the big muff can't get the volume i require (gig level volume), i have the gain turned right up so it sounds like it's about to blow, feedback etc! it just can't reach the volume of the clean sound!
I play a music man stingray through a mesa boogie venture and run it through the front of my amp, i have tried the effects return send in the back but not much different, changed the battery too...

Anyone got any ideas as to why my big muff has no guts! Is it faulty or is that just the way they are?

Do you have an active bass? Some of them have really high output, and maybe the Big Muff can't match it.
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

Either that of the Muff has a problem.
It's output should be way louder than when bypassed (off).

I used to have one I sometimes used with bass and it was way louder switched in if I turned it all the way up, which I never had to.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

Sometimes you have to step up to a better stompbox. Absolutely Analog Green Russian kicks! guitar or bass.

I have the same issue regardless of whether or not I am in active or passive mode. It seems like much of the frequency spectrum is cut or covered and really shows at high volumes (especially the low end). My guitar player has the same issues as well with a different pedal.

I have an old, original Big Muff Pi that had a similar volume problem. It turned out that the transistor in the first gain stage went bad. The schematic does not specify an exact replacement so I had to get the number off of the failed transistor and used a cross reference guide to find a suitable replacement.
