I am a really old dude (40, as guitar players go thats pretty much the dirt nap). I have forgotten more than I can remember. Experiment with every idea you get. There are incredible things to be found.
This DOES involve effects but... I was in my bands practice room and I was using a delay pedal, a wha, and my volume knob. I was doing this really cool syncopated timing thing with the delay and my volume control while pedaling the wha to add a vocal quality. I was REALLY in the zone and thought there was no one watching. But my bass player was video taping the whole thing. On playback I was stunned by what I was up to. My bass player was a goof ball and the tape dissapeared soon after. I was never able to recreate the magic This would be one of many such experiences. Sooo... Try everything and pay attention. Who knows, the next big thing could be what you create. Consider Eddie Van Halen (right hand hammer on technique) or the Edge (U2- signature kickback delay rhythm thing). At the very least you'll be more fulfilled as an artist. Never settle for being good at what others have already perfected. Find your own path.
Long words from an un-known. But it's been a good ride. And occasionally someone recognizes me from the old days and says "Weren't you that guy who played guitar..." We can't all be famous, but we should all cut our own path. It's the whole point.

I agree with everything you said, except for the above statement of yours.
( Being 44, according to what you said, I should be ready for retirement )
As long as we keep our curiosity alive, we can't grow old ( I find this to be both an outrageous lie and a beautiful truth at the same time ), so....Keep on searching, experimenting, learning and um...what else....oh yeah! Keep on rockin'....
Cheers

Ha ha. No offense intended Bob. I still love to play. Though my lifes priorities have changed.
All I meant by that statement was that if your a fresh innovative guitar player, at 40 you can't exactly go out auditioning yourself to new younger bands. At least not without being "creepy old guy" And if "going all the way" is your goal...Well, at 40 I'm alot less likely to be "discovered" than when I was 23.
Also, When I see kids playing in bands, creating and learning, it occures to me that that IS the best time to be in the Rock and Roll game. But I agree it's not the only time. And I have to admit that as a younger player I was more creative if only because of the enormous amount of time I could spend doing it.
But I digress to your correction and wish happy and creative rockin to all creatures young and old.

i got you both beat im 49 and currently trying to get a band together or join another one. the fact of the matter is that at some point if you are in a band that shows potential someone will probably suggest dumping the dinosaur. i hate the thought of being and old man playing with young boys! there is almost always a generation gap of some kind. ive come to the realization that a bar band is my best bet. if i can play few times a month again that would be satifaction enough at this age. but would like to be successfull too. lol.....im old and still kicking.
