  • Rangemaster Treble Booster Tone control

Does anybody knows how to put some tone control in a Rangemaster Clone?
i read something about using a pot for mixing between 2 capacitors, where you would normally only use a 0.0047uF cap.
but i dont know what kind of pot im supposed to use, or how to wire it for that job...im a noob really...this is going to be the first pedal i build.
Maybe its better to use a switch???

    thanks

I've done this with a small three position SPDT switch to add caps in parallel to the stock .0047uF input cap. I think I used a .015uF and a .1uF cap the first time. The .1uF pretty much made it a nasty overdrive pedal, though. I revised my circuit a few years later with a .0047uF and a .01uF that would add to the .0047uF, depending on the SPDT switch position.

If I was to build another one, I would try a variable tone control. You could replace the .0047uF input capacitor with a pot and two capacitors as you said. The pot could be a 50k-250k, linear taper...Try a 100k. The wiper would be connected to both the input jack and one side of the pot, which essentially turns the pot into a two-terminal variable resistor. Coming off the side of the pot connected to the wiper, you would run your .0047uF cap to the transistor base. Similarly, on the other side of the pot you could use a larger value such as 0.1uF and run that to the transistor base as well to create a capacitor blend circuit. You'll have to make sure you connect your pot in the correct orientation, so that your treble position is full clockwise on the pot (or full counterclockwise if that's what you prefer).
