  • Rube needs EH HG repair advice

Sorry for the elementary question. My son's Holy Grail input jack was spun around while tightening the locknut, and all 3 wires that had been connected to it have been severed. Can anyone tell me which of the leads should be soldered to the tip, and which to the sleeve? The black wire leads to the circuit board, the yellow to the footswitch, and brown to the sleeve of the output jack.

The typical input jack of a pedal effect would have three wires for this reason: One for ground, one for signal, and one to complete the battery circuit.

Ground and signal are obvious, and a trypical setup would have one end of the battery connected to the ring terminal of the jack. WHen a plain old plug is plugged in, the long sleeve shorts the battery line to ground, thus completing the circuit and turning on the battery current.

I don't know the HG, but I would think that the yellow was likely the signal - tip. And the brown likely the sleeve or ground. That leaves the black for ring contact as battery. See if that makes sense on yours. Youch brown and black together and see if the light will turn off and on with the switch. Plug the thing into an amp, and with the battery circuit complete, touch the yellow wire with a finger to see if hum reults out the amp. If so, that verifies it is the signal lead.

As an aside, the HG doesn't support the use of a battery.

Thanks, I'll give it a try tonight.

Then forget the battery parts. In any case I'd be betting the wire from the4 switch was the4 signal line. Fire up the thing and listen to it through an amp. DO the wire touch test.

In the absence of battery, I would be guessing that the black wire from the pc board was ground, and the wire to the sleeve of the other jack was just a ground jumper.

I'm not being ungrateful in failing to report success and provide thanks - my kid left the power supply at school in Ohio, so I'll get to this if he can borrow one locally.

Got it fixed, the troubleshooting tips confirmed that the tip goes to the switch. Thanks a bunch.
