Clean Boost project

Can anyone suggest me a good clean boost or volume level booster schematic? Here's my problem, I own a dynachord CLS222 Leslie silmulator that, placed after a guitar preamp, does not have enough headroom and subsequently the output volume is not unity gain since I need to keep the input volume pretty low. I want to place a volume booster right after the unit output in order to have a good output volume.
A friend of mine built me a similar unit using a schematic found in a National handbook using a LM387 IC but it's extremely hissy so I need an alternative.
