  • Problem with Electro-Harmonix Doctor Q Nano version

I've just bought a new Electro-Harmonix Doctor Q Nano version yesterday, I dont hear any WAH sound when I use it with my bass guitar...All I hear is some swishing sound but no WAH.. I tried turning the "trim pot" to the left, but still no wah sound..just louder swishing sound..

Quote"There’s a trimpot in the Nano Dr. Q that seems to adjust the overall frequency range of the pedal. I tweaked this a bit to make it work with my bass, and it’s never given me a problem. Turn the Range knob all the way up, and adjust the trimmer (while playing) until it sounds good."

      Could be simple "undersignalitis".

The stock Dr.Q assumes a certain iput level to trigger the sweep, and not all guitars/basses/sources measure up. If you have anything with a boosted output that you can plug in before it, try that out, and see it the problem can be cured.

Ideally, that preceding pedal should have some dynamic range. So, if it's a compressor, turn the compression down, and the volume up. Or if it is a distortion or overdrive, turn the distortion amount down, and the volume up. An EQ pedal with all bands hiked up 6db or so will also do nicely, as will any clean booster.

The trimpot only "works" for part of its range, above and below that critical range, you won't hear any sweep whatsoever, no matter what you feed the pedal. So do any experiments with the trimpot set to around 10-12:00.

Finally, the "cure" that a great many in the DIY community have opted for is to replace the 2.2meg gain-setting resistor in the envelope extractor stage with either 2.7meg or even 3.3meg to increase the sensitivity. I gather the Nano pedals tend to use surface mount resistors, so replacement can be tricky. It IS possible, though, to find 1/8w resistors of suitable value, and they can be easily soldered into the spot previously occupied by the 2.2M unit.
