  • Schober Reverbatape?

Another organ tech I know has a Schober Reverbatape in his gear hoard, and I was wondering if anyone here has messed around with one as an alternative to an Echoplex or a Space-Echo.

In other words, would it be worth getting it working again?

    Thanks,
    David

I haven't seen one of those in 30 years.

As I recall, they work at high signal level, have a very short tape loop and maybe 2 playback heads, so compared to EPs and SEs it would be limited in the delay time, would need a mike to line level preamp and some sort of output mixer stage added. Sounds like a great time!

Seriously, it has such a simple layout and open construction, you could have a lot of fun creating some sort of echo device. And if you work with or around some of the above mentioned limitations, it could be turned into useful device.

I recently got a Reverbatape for $67 not including shipping. It has some relatively simple transistor circuits (all pnp), maybe all germanium. I found this information in Electronic Musical Instruments by Rchard H. Dorf. It has a positive ground and I had to replace two electrolytic capacitors to get -30V from the power supply. The voltage across the zener diode was about 17-18 volts with the old capacitor across it. I unsoldered two of them, checked them with a capacitor tester and checked the resistance with an analog ohmeter and I thought they would work, but found out replacing the one across the zener diode with a new cap gave the necessary -30 volts. I still have to rig up a control for it.

          Nice.
How does it sound? By principle I would expect more of a multiple echo rather than a diffuse reverb effect.

I need a control for it. In the youtube videos you can see it in use with the Reverbatape. There was one for sale at edsgoodstuff.com and I tried contacting them twice to ask them if they take Paypal, but got no response. I have a a 7 pin plug and was planning on making one. I could use three 100K linear pots I have or wait for the 4 ganged 100K pots I ordered to come in the mail. The article from the book talks about it and if you look at the schematic, you can see the numbers 1-7 in circles in the schematic. This, apparently, corresponds to the 7 pin socket for connection to the control. In one of the pictures from edsgoodstuff.com you can see some resistors on the control pots, so apparently they aren't on the PCB, maybe, I'll have to take a closer look at it.

Schober Reverbatape Kit winning bid $14. It looks like it came with extra tape loops which is something I need for mine.
