  • SMT components or DIP hand made effect pedal?

    SMT components are cheaper ,smaller volume and easy assembled on PCB.But the power of SMT components is smaller, the noise of SMT components is loud . at same time, It is impossible to repair SMT pedal by customer. which components do you like in pedal?
    We mainly use hand made DIP effect pedal. We think it would make sound better.

    In the 60s they said the same things about DIP ICs and 1/8W resistors. SMT products can be repaired and modified if you have the right equipment. The difficult thing is obtaining the components in small quantities. The ball-grid packages require very special equipment. Even if the equipment is available, they have trouble in factories repairing some of those boards.

      – Is the only correct statement.

      “SMT components are cheaper”.
      – Not necessarily. Price depends on quantity of manufactured chips.
      If quantity is smaller, price is larger and vice versa.

      - What do you mean easy? Manual correct placing and soldering of 64-pin SMT chip in QFP or PLCC package is harder than DIP one. Needless to say, this work is much harder for modern SMT chips without usual pins (HVQFN or BGA packages).
      Machine component assembling and soldering is not relevant for tasks performed by a repair shop.

      “Power of SMT components is smaller”.
      – Power of a chip depends on type of package and a suitable SMT package can always be chosen. If a SMT package of needed power does not exist, there’s nothing to compare.

      “Noise of SMT components is loud”.
      – This is untrue. Noise level is determined by internal electronic structure and is specified in datasheets. It is exactly the same for both SMT and DIP packages. You can only compare the same chip in different packages.

      “It is impossible to repair SMT pedal by customer”.
      – In my opinion customer shouldn’t open a device, without sufficient professional knowledge.
      Most customers cannot correctly replace resistors.
      If he is either amateur or semi-professional, then his repair ability depends on his professional level. Real professional can manually replace QFP or PLCC 240-pin chip without problem.
