  • violin-like effect

    Heya,
I once had a zoom multi effect, dont remember it's number, that was about 10 years ago.
It had a violin-like effect named violin...
I just bought me self a new multi effect by zoom - G2.1Nu, and was looking for this violin effect i that machine, saddly it wasn't there.
Now I want to create it for my recordings. does any one nows how can i create such effect?
I have the Zoom Edit&Share program where I can create or edit existing effects on that machine.
    PLZ I need help.

The effect is the same as in one of dream theater's songs.
here is a link to this song, they use the effect at time: 1:41

Two aspects to this: tone and volume swell.

The tone I can't speak to. In past, the volume swell has been done by pedals like the Boss Slow Gear, the PAiA Gator, or simply deft use of a volume pedal.

Some delay pedals, however, can do a very nice job of it. My Echo Park has a setting called "Swell" which provides a volume swell for each repeat. If I set it to a very short delay, wet only, and no additional repeats, so that I get only ONE repeat of a volume-swelled echo, it does a very nice job of the violin-like sound. because the sound assumes you won't hear anything for a little bit, the lag that comes with the 10-20msec onset of the sound is not obtrusive. Because the note detection is being done digitally, rather than through a too-simple analog circuit, you get very good tracking, better than what one typically gets on any analog envelope-modifying devices.

Sound to me like Petrucci is just doing volume swells with a volume pedal or just his volume control on the guitar.

My personal favorite for violin-like swells is reverb on full wet signal. I've used VST reverb and spring reverb and both do a decent job. I prefer using it to envelope-based swell effects (Slow Gear, etc) since it doedn't have tracking issues. One can play a note while another is decaying without chopping up the first. Each note is treated on an individual basis.

Getting the tone right is another step though. I've heard that bowed strings have a sawtooth waveform; getting that from a guitar is pretty tough. I've found that light overdrive/distortion gives a passable tone. Perhaps a bit of lowpass filtering after it too. The reverb kind of smears the sound and rolls off highs anyways, so it comes out pretty smooth sounding. Reverb can also add a kind of acoustic feel to the sound.

My experience is with fretless bass though. I don't know how good it will sound on guitar. The fretless part alone makes a big difference I'm sure. I'd say it's worth a shot though.

                Hope this helps.

This is a very low tech solution but is interesting to do, especially if you have a volume pedal. Make a violin bow out of a round wound low E string and a piece of dowel. You don't need rosin and it is very loud.
