CryBaby Slash severely damaged - What to do with it? Any ideas?

Hello friends.

I got this CryBaby Slash signature with its PCB corroded, some of those micro resistors and caps have disolved ŋ?. The lugs/terminals of some ICs have dissolved too. PCB traces crumbles like old paper. It is really a mess. All the damage starts at the bottom, at the 18V input from the pcb, but it didn't get to the top (fasel, pot, etc)

My friend left the two 9v batteries in it for years, plus he lives by the sea.

I think the main components will work, so I was wondering what can I do with it.
Maybe turn it into a classic hand wired wah, with some mods, taking advantage of all the potentiometers holes that already have.

I already have a dual expression pedal and volume pedal.

Junk all that and just build a REAL Wah there.

The original ones, loved by Millions, used **one** transistor inside, period.

I *hope* it has an inductor inside, and the proper value (they might very well emulate it) , the only component worth salvaging.

I hope it also has a rack and pinion mechanism to rotate a pot.

That and the case, you add the rest.

Think it was 2 transistors for a basic wah. I would buy or make the PCB or perf, reuse the inductor if it's 500mh and the pot, junk the rest.

Let's say the main components are good. The problem is at the power section and distortion circuit, with the PCB traces really bad. Can't tell if those disolved micro compomentents are resistors or caps, and basically two ICs with several missing lugs. The thing is beyond repair.

Parts: Pot (100k), rack, pinion, the red fasel, switches, jacks, are all good.

I was thinking to do a classic wah, hand wired, with lots of mojo =D Is there any really popular wah I can make out of this? Which circuit is the most popular/loved?

I don't have experience making PCBs (with solvents and stuff), so it have be point to point soldering. Maybe those perforated pcb

It appears the new version is the two transistor circuit with IC buffers on the input and output.

The original Vox Wha had 2 transistors and that's the minimum necessary for an active resonant filter with variable capacitance multiplier.
(I have 2 originals from the 60s.)

It would help to see close-up pictures of board and destruction.

Well he had to tour with Axl for years and abused alcohol a ton, I'd just buy him a new top hat every couple of years and not ask him to get any better on the guitar...

A wah favourite of mine is the Maestro Boomerang. It works fine with a regular 100k pot and I've built a few of these into gutted pedals. Used in the theme from Shaft.

I would pass on the buffers and make it true bypass. I’ve been using some 4dpdt switches in “Big Crush” compressors. You could put in “variable Q” switches and stuff. But I find most people find a setting they like and leave it there. You can hard wire that setting. I would be tempted to build a dirt box of your choice or a TS into it. OR a volume control option. Lots of choices and not that complex if you have the time.

I'm sorry, I was really busy.
Here are some pics of the pedal.

The two knobs for the gain section were chopped off. Damage in the pcb traces, too many missing parts. The socktes for the batteries were crumbling and sulfated (like everything else).

CryBaby Slash is a complex pedal made with SMD components. Serious repair except in factory service is within the domain of SF.
The simplest solution is to use mechanics from pedal and make new satisfactory electronics.
Colorsound, EHX, Morley has interesting and relatively simple solutions that are easy to make in DIY.

If you want ot make it easy on yourself, you could just buy a replacement pcb of a standard crybaby for around 20 bucks for example at : https://www.amplifiedparts.com/produ...dunlop-crybaby)
That will probably fit perfectly in the housing of the Slash Crybaby.
