Built one a couple of years back. It's a good little unit, providing nice high input impedance, and good gain without grime.

Keep in mind that at a certain point, the "cleanliness" of a boost will start to disappear as it pushes other devices, whether pedals or amp, past their point of cleanliness. Used at less than max output, however, into an amp that is not poised on the verge of breakup, it provides nice clean boost without any coloration other than the high end that was not lost via the cable.

      Lizard Leg - Flying Dragon

My buddy Steve Miller has designed a clean boost that is just phenominal. I know several guys who use them. We did a side-by-side with my MOSFET Boost and it blows mine away.

MXR Custom Audio Electronics Boost/Overdrive ($130 @MF) is the best I found as long as you use it with a tube amp. Super clean boost and a fantastic Overdrive( very creamy to metal though I don't use the gain very high). The boost can be set from 0db to +20db. I have tried many and this is the best.
Remember to use it with a tube amp. I have tried it through a friend Fender Frontman and the boost was great but the overdrive was horrible.

Apparently Visual Sound debuted a clean boost at the recent NAMM, called the Truetone. It uses some simple tricks to achieve very high clean headroom, and also provides a treble cut control so that one can adjust how much harmonic content is generated from the amp when pummeling its front end. Could be worth waiting for.

I was curious about that MXR pedal. I think I should check it out.

I would check it out if I were you. But since I own it?(LOL) I really believe this was designed around a tube amp. The boost works amazing on every amp I used. Very clean with no coloring. But like I said I tried the boost on a ss and it did not sound very appealing. But I have also tried it on various Tube amps and got the greatest results. I use it with my AC30 and a B-52 AT-100 Head and this pedal has a permanent place in my lineup. You couldn't pay enough to get this from me. (of course I would just buy another if the price got high enough. LOL)

                Toadworks Meat Jr.

I have an inexpensive little thing made by Toadworks called MEAT JR. Don't ask me exactly what it is it does to the tone but it just makes my amps come to life. The tone is richer, fatter, overloaded with cholesterol, but not distorted. I bought it to use with harp, but it wakes up my mandolin and my lap steel as well. How? I can't really say, but people come up and ask me what kind of pedal I'm using.
