I got a crybaby for free that the previous owner said had a problem. After messing with it, I noticed that it went from low to high really quickly and before and after that part of the sweep the sound didn’t change much. What could be causing it?

Dunlop Hot Potz have a relatively sharp "S" taper, restricting the active part of the track to around 90°. Outside this region there's essentially no change.
So the travel of the pot should be adjusted to use all the active part of the track.- Own Opinions Only -
