Well, they do say that a broken watch gives you the correct time twice a day. At least for analog clocks- the ones with hands for you youngsters out there.

I heard from our vigilant sentry that links to alibabasomethingorother.com started showing up in the posts that our new friend had already made after which they all were deleted and the new member(s) were banned. Our vigilant sentry believes that it was a human not a bot. One possibility is that he edited his posts or his signature to include the link after a few days. Another possibility is that a software revision here does not allow for links in initial posts until a certain threshold is reached.

the sig would work wouldn't it? (since as far as I know there is a time limit on editing posts)

re: the reason (or one apparent reason) for the weird posts (at least the ones w/links) is (what I heard) is that the aim is basically for the crims to obtain CC information. The spambot links (I suppose more of them = helps to land a higher google ranking = more likely for someone to shop at such a site) lead to some harmless looking site selling some generic thing (so on the surface you might think, "Who the **** cares about selling some cheesy trinkets and making the effort to spam such products?"), the buyer inputs their CC info (maybe they aren't thinking, it's a last minute shopping thing or whatever), then...

I didn't know that! I'm a mod so I can edit anybody's posts any time I want- a power that I never abuse no matter how much somebody pisses me off.

This is actually the first time that I have been powerfully tempted to edit an post. Just say no, just say No, just say NO!

Please don't reply to these spam posts. Just report them and they'll get smashed. The technique I prefer is to "physically remove" all of the new member's posts and ban him.

Since the original post disappears, your replies don't make any sense at best.

At worst, you quoted the spam post including whatever link was in it, and I have to edit your post to remove that link, otherwise the spammer still wins.
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

I agree with you on how to deal with posts that contain spam. However this thread is about posts that appear to be from spambots but have no spam in them. Are we deleting those posts and the "people" who posted them?

Perhaps you could just delete the replies to spammers when you are dealing with the spam. I don't think that would qualify as censorship; I think that most people here would want to have their replies to deleted spam posts be deleted, too, only they don't want to bother a moderator with something like that.

                    Thanks

I, er, uh, did just respond directly to a spambot on the "OTL" thread. In case someone needs to squash that. I can still delete my post but someone has already responded to that too.

I would think that if you notice a condom enough to "review" it, it's not very good....or your aim is poor....or you are somehow "not applying to the affected area".

Didn't someone say that the bots will edit their posts later to add a spammy payload? That seems like the most likely explanation to me. So, anything that fails the Turing test gets hosed.

That was pure speculation and I have no idea whether it is wrong or right. I was hoping that we might get some clarifications from the powers that be. I did not see any spam added to the two posts I mentioned in this thread.

I'm not too impressed with the latest generation- the millennials?- and I have a hunch that many of them would not pass the Turing test either.

I decided to be a one-man welcoming committee for the suspected 'bots and sent this PM to 2 of the suspects:

Welcome to the Music Electronics Forum

I hope that you find the forum here useful. So what kind of electronic musical gear are you interested in?

                                Thanks for joining!

I sent the PM's on March 8th and never heard back from either of them. I noticed that one of them was banned and the other one is still listed as a junior member. Here is a link to the remaining post- go ahead and nuke it (and him) if you want:
