  • Computer being blocked

    Hello,
Sometimes when I try to down load a photo or some such. I get a popup that the computer cannot do it because MSVCR100.dll is not installed.
How can I even find out what that is or repair it ?

I usually have good success finding solutions to similar problems by Googling the error message phrase or a reasonable relevant portion of the error message. If I don't find what I need via the Google search then I do a search on youtube.

Well that is a Dynamic Linking Library file on your system that is not being referenced correctly. Possibly your registry on your computer has some sort of corruption and the key is not referencing that file in the correct manner or the file is just missing. What version of windows are you running? Please check if you are running a 32 or 64 bit system too.

Essentially there is a problem with your installation of "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable." Look at this web page below and tell us if that is the same exact error message you encounter.

      https://knowledge.autodesk.com/suppo...-computer.html

Edit: BTW the linked web page I attached is not exactly the same circumstance as your error problem but might prove to shed light on your systems issue still.

Here's a location with free file downloads.
It also has checksums to check you downloaded the right thing.

Hmmm... they offer a free demo version which reportedly is very limited but strongly encourage you to buy the real version for $14.95. One user review said that you can download the missing DLL file manually using just the demo but no details are given so you're on your own.

          From another user review:

          >>> The DLL's are fine, just don't install the DLL fixer program. I used this site to fix a DirectX DLL problem and it worked, and I am virus-free.<<<

          https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...b-fa0e3b32bb51

The following quotes from the vendor page makes me wonder how exactly how much access to your computer are you giving to the program. A normal amount?

          OPTIMAL FIT DLL INSTALLATION
Using the DLL-files.com Client really is simple: Input the filename of the DLL that is missing or corrupted.
The program first detects what your system setup is, for example which Windows version you are using.
Then it links up with the massive DLL-files.com archive in the cloud, using a secure connection, and locates a compatible version of the DLL for your system, typically among many available versions.
When a compatible version has been located, a simple one-click installation is offered with the recommended DLL file version installed in the appropriate location on your PC. The DLL-files.com Client will also register the DLL in your system, a process which ensures that all programs will be able to find it, thereby solving your "missing DLL error".
A user answer from the Microsoft link referring to XP but I think that running "SFC /Scannow" (without quotation marks) might also work in later versions of Windows.

          Hi,
1.****** When exactly do you receive this error message?
2.****** Is it at the startup of the computer or while trying to launch any particular application?

As you seem to face multiple issues it would be better that you perform System File Checker (SFC) scan on your computer and check if that helps you in fixing these issues.

System File Checker gives an administrator the ability to scan all protected files to verify their versions. If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the cache folder (%System root%\System32\Dllcache) or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file. System File Checker also checks and repopulates the cache folder.

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run System File Checker.
          a. Put the Windows XP CD to the CD-ROM.
          b. Click "Exit" if the auto-menu pops up.
          c. Click "Start", and click "Run".
          d. Type "SFC /Scannow" (without quotation marks) in the "Open" box, and click "OK".
Note: There is a space between "SFC" and "/Scannow".

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

More Information about SFC scan can be found in these documents:

          Hope this helps.
          Steve A.

P.S. I wonder if SpareRib has already solved his problem...

Agreed! I guess you could say that I am running Linus Jr. most of the time these days as I use my Android tablet much more than my PC...

I've had a bunch of boxes stacked in front of my PC desk for a few years now and once I clear them out I plan to get serious about switching over to Ubuntu.

Hmmm... it looks like the DLL-Files site can be very helpful after all. (I didn't realize that you could just scroll down the page to be able to download the files. My bad!)

How to fix msvcr100.dll is missing error
Step 1: Head to the DLL-Files website and simply scroll down until you see the download links (you don't have to pay - despite appearances).
                http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/wi...image-3589464/

                How do I install the DLL-file I have downloaded from DLL-files.com ?
                Step 1
                • Open the zip-file you downloaded from DLL-files.com .
                • Extract the DLL-file to a location on your computer...
                • After extracting your zip-file, place the extracted DLL-file in the directory of the program that is requesting the file. Make sure to use a 32bit DLL-file for a 32bit program, and a 64bit DLL-file for a 64bit program. Failure to do so will likely result in a 0xc000007b error.

                Step 2
                • If that does not help your problem, place the file to your system directory.
                By default, this is
                C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me),
                C:\WINNT\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or
                C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10).

                On a 64bit version of Windows, the default folder for 32bit DLL-files is C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ , and for 64bit dll-files C:\Windows\System32\ .
                • Make sure to overwrite any existing files (but make a backup copy of the original file**).

                • Reboot your computer.

                Step 3
If the problem still occurs, try the following to register the DLL-file:

                ● For 32bit DLL-files on a 32bit Windows, and for 64bit DLL-files on a 64bit Windows:
                • Open an elevated command prompt.
To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click "Command Prompt", and then click Run as administrator.
                • In Windows 8/10, go to the Start screen. Start typing cmd and Windows will find "Command Prompt". Right click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator".
                • If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
                • Type regsvr32 "filename".dll and press Enter.

                ● Registering 32bit DLL-files on a 64bit Windows:
                • Open an elevated command prompt, as instructed above.
                • In the command prompt, start by typing following and press enter:
                cd c:\windows\syswow64\
                • then type the following and press enter:
                regsvr32 c:\windows\syswow64\"filename".dll
                • Finally, reboot your PC one last time to refresh the memory. That should do it!

                Steve A.

*** I have renamed existing DLL files a lot! To simplify matters I change the file extension to LLD, adding a number to the filename to differentiate it from an older version if present.

I'm glad that tboy dealt with that spam - I've been locked out of my gmail account on my main tablet for a few days now. (OT: Problems started a month ago when like a dummy I took Googles advice to change my gmail password. I now need to "update server settings" but I haven't figured out *which* server it is referring to. Darn Google!)
