There are a batch of Russian, and Chinese Packed Linux Distro's.
I stay clear of them too.

I wanna cry! I've just been reminded why I turned off all updates years ago. It was because I didn't want Microsoft breaking my computer. I did the security update in the OP on my wife's W8.1 laptop and it killed it stone dead! It won't even load up Windows now. All I get is an error message. Thanks Microsoft.

Oh, that sux, Dave. If nothing else, try running system restore. You may need to run it in safe mode if the thing won't boot. Just pick a restore point prior to your last update.

Thanks for the tip Dude. I didn't think to use safe mode as I was in panic mode! (she wasn't well pleased) but I did remember that I had the files downloaded to make a rescue disk (actually a rescue flash drive as it doesn't have an optical drive) so I was able boot from the flash drive to run System Restore and it fixed it, phew!

Funny you should say that. Pretty much the same happened to a neighbour only they did not have a backup, recovery disk, restore partition or even the original windows key. I installed Ubuntu on it for them.

Damn... I picked up some sort of bug last week which popped up a persistent window in my Pale Moon browser (a sleek hot rodded version of Firefix) giving me a link to click on to return control of my computer to me. After rebooting everything seemed fine until I opened Pale Moon... the damned persistent window popped up again!
No problem-o... I just need to go to System Restore which will fix everything. Only when I went there all of my System Restore points were gone! So I was wondering: did some malware delete them? That would sure be a sneaky trick...

Everything seemed to be fine as long as I didn't open Pale Moon (I had even installed the latest version of it which did not help.) So I decided to run Internet Explorer for the first time in many years specifically to download the 60 day trial of Norton since Avast wasn't finding and fixing the problem.

I hadn't installed Norton yet but had to run Pale Moon very cautiously yesterday to get an old password through the Options window and guess what? The damned persistent window was gone!

Did you install Ubuntu proper with Unity Desktop, or some other variety?
I usually use Xubuntu, Ubuntu Sudio, or U-Mate/XFCE desktop.

It was Unity. I think Unity is fine if you don't want to do and 'under the hood' type stuff. They just needed to use the Browser and Libre Office type stuff.

What is exactly this Wanna Cry virus/malware?
To want to, is to be able to.
