I have an HP 2009M.

Pretty much the same monitor.

The instruction page is very nearly a copy.

I have messed with every setting on the monitor itself & I cannot get it to change the size of the screen.

That leads me to believe that you have a driver issue.

Hmm. Any chance Windows had a recent update that may have caused this?

AHA!! I like that theory, that would explain why I found it shut down: it updated then turned off so the updates would take hold.
