  • TruOil Finish

I`m thinking about using Birchwood Casey TruOil finish on my next guitar I`m getting too sensitive to nitro laquer. I`ve used TruOil in the past for gunstocks but with a satin finish, just wondered if anyone has experience taking it to a high gloss like laquer. I`ve tried the waterborne laquers but didn`t like them. I like to use shellac as a sealer to bring out the grain and assume it will work as a sealer for TruOil. Mikej

You can take TruOil up to a nice satiny, rich sheen. Birchwood-Casey also sells polishing kits for this. It is also totally unnecessary, and even undesirable to seal with shellac first. In fact, you might want to go OVER the TruOil with shellac, which CAN be rubbed out to a gloss. TruOil can also be tinted with stain concentrates, e.g. ColorTone.

Yes you can take it to a gloss. I saw this one where he did a french polish method that worked very well. Somewhere on this site, diy finish I think, he describes the process.
