  • Epoxy Grain Filler & Finish Compatibility

I did some finishing with high end water based lacquer and the recommended grain filler was epoxy with fumed silica that you added to create a paste. The filler works great. You can fill fairly large cracks and 3 applications sanded out produces a very smooth base to apply finish over. I found the water based lacquer to be rather finicky and expensive and what I had left over has set up in the can.

Has anyone applied other types of finish over epoxy? Any ideas or recommendations? Is it possible to use the epoxy as a finish coat?

I spent some time on the web and have answered my own questions.

It appears that epoxy as a finish is probably not a great idea due to poor UV resistance. Sounds like it will rapidly yellow and age.

Found several references to builders using epoxy as a grain filler with nitrocellulose lacquer used as the finish. This is what I plan to do.

My project is a hardwood head cabinet for a 36 watt amp that I finally completed.

Hope this info is of use to others. If I have any problems or tips will post a followup.
