  • fret slot saw

    Hi

Im just approaching the stage of sawing the fret slots in my fingerboard and was wondering if anybody knows of a decent saw to do the job?. The frets i have have a dimension of .95 at the tang. On my last guitar after i had saw the frets with a gents saw i went to put the frets in, some of them stayed in place, some of them fell out. Can u get different sided gents saws? because when i look on the net for gent saws they never give a thickness of the blade.

    Where have you been looking?

    Here's one from Stew-Mac:

The corrosion-resistant 10" Sheffield steel blade has .023" width of cut, to match our fretwire.

    And one from LMI:

It has a .023” (.55mm) kerf for normal fretwire sizes

I have the LMI saw and have used it on a bunch of fingerboards. 0.023" is the standard slot size.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I have the Stew Mac saw, and it is very good quality. I also have their mitre box and their blade for use on a power saw.

Both can be used with their fret slotting templates. Not the cheapest route, but excellent results.
