  • Best Lipstick P.U.'s, Strat Mount?

Hi guys. It's my first time so go easy.

i'm putting a lipstick pickup in the neck of a tele style guitar. it's got to be strat sized which limits me to a few brands. i love the sound of the neck lipstick pickup in my jerry jones bari but they don't sell the pickups alone. does anyone have any experience with or thoughts on a good sounding aftermarket lipstick p.u.? so far i've found kent armstrong, seymour duncan, and a company in boston called GFS but i don't know which might or might not sound good.

more specifics: semihollow alder, maple neck, rosewood board, 12 string baritone (oh, yeah!). also, as i don't like the sound of the bridge lipstick i'll probably try a tv jones stock gretsch style humbucker in the bridge.

any thoughts on these or any others?

    thanks.

I've got a set of the GFS lipsticks in my main slide guitar and it sounds really great. For the price, you can't beat them.

I've got some other GFS pickups in some of my other guitars and they have never disappointed me.

I've got Seymours in my "A Team" guitars, so I'd say SD is my goto pickup. I haven't tried the Seymour Lipsticks but, I wouldn't hesitate to try them.

If your looking for a good deal and great sounding pickup, go with the GFS. If you don't like it, you won't have lost much $.

Not long ago, I've put a SD strat lipstick in the neck of a strat. It didn't quite matched the others (Fender CS '54s) soundwise and output-wise, but I thought that it sounded great by itself in that position, lots of body and chimey highs, very articulated, VERY hi-fi sounding. I don't think they'll be loved by the blues guys that much...

The GFS lipstcks are not bad, but they don't sound at all like the SDs.

I've got a set of Duncan custom shop vintage correct alnico 6 magnet lipsticks for my Danelectro, and a set for my Strat. They both sound good and are generally regarded as the best out there, save the Jerry Jones, which aren't sold individually.....they come with a guitar. Duncan does them with their standard line rather than their custom shop, but I'm not sure that they have the vintage correct alnico 6 magnets or not. This doesn't matter for the Strat lipsticks as there is no vintage thing with those, but with the full size lipsticks it does make a difference. I'm sure they would sound fine with alnico 5 too.

According to their site, all the GFS lipsticks use Alnico II magnets.

Vintage correct lipstick pickups should use alnico 6 magnets, though not many do. It does make a difference in the sound however.
