  • Strat SSS pup mod to have SSS or HH

    Anybody done this mod?

Wire the 3 sc pups so that NM and BM are in series to create 2 humbucker like pickups.

The guy on the youtube video use two toggles. I am wondering if a 3 position slide switch might work better. It looks like a small number of switches can be fit into the existing body cavity without additional routing.

pos 1 - normal single coil operation
    pos 2 - neck/mid humbucker
    pos 3 - bridge/mid humbucker
I am learning. My posts should not be considered as expert advice or suggestions for you to implement... on the contrary, I am looking for expert advice!

To be honest, I didn't even open your attachement. After much experimenting I didn't find the NM and NB series/humbucking arrangements all that useful. The way I do it does use a three position switch. It also uses a TPDT mini toggle in place of the bottom tone control. So you end up with a single volume and tone control. The P'up wiring is: 1) BMN in series with the M out of phase, very useful and powerful. 2) MN parallel in phase 3)N

Flip TPDT switch: 1)B 2)BM parallel in phase 3)M

So you get all the normal strat tones but with the addition of the BMN series w/M out of phase option.

The only rub is that unless your using noiseless pickups you have to choose between having the series arrangement hum or the parallel arrangements hum, because in the series arrangement the M is out of phase. If you leave the M in phase for this circuit the tone is too balsy for most amps with too much bottom end. My personal frankenstrat has a push/pull pot on the tone control that reverses the phase of the M pickup more options.
