  • Where do you get your shielding tape?

I used to get mine from Dimarzio, but it only makes sense to do it with them if you want very large quantities. I don't have pockets that deep. I've done Stew-Mac and hated it because the sticky side wasn't conductive, though by looking at their site it seems like they've since changed that; and it isn't that bad of a price, either.

What is the stuff used on PCB? Is it manufactured in when the FR4 is made, or is it just a different type of adhesive?

In the past I think I've used Allparts for small quantities. We use enough at the shop that I bought a large roll from an industrial tape supplier. Copper tape is available with many different thicknesses and adhesives, including conductive. I'm not sure what you're referring to as far as PCBs are concerned. The boards are copper clad by a lamination process and then etched. Copper foil is apparently considered a 'budget' option for making EMI shielded rooms. If a roll of foil a couple inches wide is a couple hundred bucks, imagine the cost to do this:

I was wondering if the lamination process involved anything that you could get aftermarket - whether it is an adhesive backing, glue, etc. Should someone want something a bit more sticky than the adhesive backed stuff, it could be an option... but I really don't know how it is made so I can't say for sure.

Since writing this thread it seems that Stew Mac now sells copper tape where the sticky side is conductive, so that is positive! It always is a pain in the butt when you have to add solder joints every time the tape touches because overlapping alone doesn't do it, or won't reliably do it.

Thanks for the tip on allparts.

You don't need to shield an entire room if everyone has foil hats. Stupid aliens...

What I use is copper foil that you find at a hobby shop. Then I cut it and line the cavity, Here is a link that explains how I shield a controls cavity.

If I recall, I bought a roll of copper foil for around $10. I don't remember the exact size, but I think its something like 12" x 36"

I got lucky. Years ago I bought a bunch of rolls in various sizes at Skycraft Surplus in Orlando. Nice 3M stuff, but at it's "sell by date" when I bought it. Well years later, it still sticks great (at least for our purposes) and I do solder even though it isn't really necessary. "Lift off, nuke from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

I got the stewmac tape about 4 years ago, in various widths. The conductive adhesive worked fine, but I soldered anyway. The strat is still noisy though (near rail station / sidings though). Pete.
