  • Two volumes only, no tone, with 2 HB

Hi. I just modified an Italia Rimini (great guitar, great price) to have 2 TV Jones pickups (humbuckers). I never use a tone control so just wanted two volumes to blend and a switch. When i turn one volume slightly, at the middle switch position, that one pickup totally drops out. I was reading this is a load issue and to reverse the hot wires to the center lug of the pots, but that doesn't help either. How can i use two volumes to blend between the pickups at the middle switch position?

Here is how they are / were wired (hot wire flipped to the middle lug too, but same result).

    That looks pretty close.

My les paul, In middle Switch position, you have to have both vol engaged to get sound, but you can blend them somewhat.
If you turn either Pot Off, they both go off.

Looks like you've wired it up correctly, it could be the pot is broken. Try a different one.

And big tee, have you tried moving hot wire to centre lug. That should solve your problem.

        I don't have a problem.
I have them wired just like the S. D. diagram I referred to, and that's the way all the Les Pauls I've had any dealings with work.

In the middle posistion, You can blend them, but You have work them together.
I don't use the middle pos. much.
The advantage to 2 Vol. and 2 Tone, is you can tune the Tone pot to the Pickup.
If you want to run a .022 on the neck P/U, and a .047 on the Bridge Tone you can do so.
Also You can adjust the vol., so when you switch between them you have the same vol. level.
Or for Lead, you can have the vol on the Bridge Set Louder.
I really like the Double Tone and Double Vol.
Give it a try, I bet you would like it!
There are some other wiring layouts, for independant Tone, but I tried them and the Seymour Layout Worked best for me.

I know you can blend them with 2 volumes in the middle. But you said
"If you turn either Pot Off, they both go off"

Which leads me to believe you turn 1 volume down, and they both turn down...

You are correct, If you turn one down, you have to turn the other up and vise versa.
Read the wiring info for StewMac Golden Age Pickups.
                They explain it best.
If you wire them regular you have the issue.
If you use the alternative you don't, but it just don't sound good IMO that way.
You have to select wiring diagram on the bottom of the page.
