  • Does Zakk Wylde Epiphone need battery?

Hello everyone. I have a Epiphone Zakk Wylde Bullseye Epiphone Zakk Wylde Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar - eBay (item 150577704769 end time Apr-14-11 16:00:46 PDT) This is the one. I had this guitar for about 6 years now. I was at the local guitar center recently and they told me I need to replace the 9v battery for this guitar. I opened up the back but no sign of a battery. Is the guy from guitar center right? If so where the hell is this battery located? Thank you.

No, that guitar uses the EMG-HZ pickups, which are EMG's passive line of pickups. They do not need a battery like the EMG-81 and 85 org the other active pickups EMG makes. Very easy to confuse the two if you're not specific. Most people automatically think" active pickups" when they hear EMG.

Ok Thanks. Not really good with technical side of guitar. I heard many good things about EMG-81 and 85. Should I consider switching the EMG-HZ to EMG-81? I believe the Gibson Bullseye uses EMG-81 85?

are you unsatisfied with your tone? If you like it, don't change them. You could find a guitar with an 81/85 and see if you like them and hear enough of a difference that it is worth a couple hundred bucks.

IMO, you can't compare active and passive pickups, they feel and sound completely differently and are best used in different situiations. Kinda like wrenches: sometimes you need an open end wrench, other times you need a boxed end wrench. I did not really appreciate the differences until I played active pickups for several years, then bought a guitar with passives and A/B them. It all depends on what you want out of your sound.
