Unabashed plug for Lollar Supro reproduction...

Note: I spent many minutes composing this reply for a *different* Supro pickup in the Pickup Makers forum so I figured I might as well move it here to Guitar Tech...

I've played with the idea over the years, but I've never actually seen one apart. Anybody ever attempt one or something similar? If so, any tips?

Jason Lollar is probably the only person who has ever made these pickups in modern times. I bought two*** of them from him at what I considered to be very reasonable prices when you look at the tooling expenses required.

Fortunately Jason is a supporter of endangered species like Supro lap steels and each one of these he sells keeps another Supro from ending up in a trash barrel. And with modern magnets and his own tweaks they sound better than the ones on my three vintage Supros.

*** I have a pair of Chandler RH-2 lap steels which have a great tone acoustically and are a real joy to play. After upgrading the first one with his String-through-Steel pickup I was so pleased with the results that I ordered a second one. Best to call them up with digital calipers and instrument at hand to make sure that you know what body modifications you might have to make and which shim you might need.

As for cannabilizing one from a 50s or 60s Supro lap steel they are mounted to the metal bridge plate so its not like you can just pop it off and put it on your guitar or lap steel... you must first design and fabricate an appropriate mounting plate and hope that it works.

I see that he is once again selling his horseshoe pickups... Long live lap steels!

Sorry, I don't understand what "unabashed plug" means. Looked up "unabashed" und "plug" in my dictionary but did not get a clue. What kind of jargon is this?

Jason fabricated all of the parts for these Supro repros himself so unless you have a good machine shop you might want to pass on it. My understanding is that he played lap steel himself many years ago so unlike most boutique winders he gives special consideration to lap steel guitar pickups. Definitely a labor of love!

If someone wants a Supro pickup like Ry Cooder uses in his famous Coodercaster without trashing a vintage Supro lap steel a Lollar repro is the only option. He also makes repros of the Teisco gold foil pickups that Ry uses in the neck position. I consider him to be a protector of endangered species as well as the foremost boutique pickup winder (in the mid 90's he wrote the book on rewinding pickups including directions on making your own winder with a sewing machine motor.) Jason Lollar is truly a national treasure and with customers like Keith Richards, et al, it's not like he really needs an unabashed plug from me.
