  • on/on/on dpdt switch series parallel- phase

Is it possible to wire two humbuckers for series/parallel phase with one on/on/on dpdt mini switch? I don't remember which is louder series or parallel. I want to switch the pickups out of phase with each other the loudest way So basically can I have an on/on/on switch or an on/on switch accomplish this.

I prefer parallel operation (standard 3-pos switch on a 2 HB axe). It's got some sparkle, if that's your thing. In series the result may be louder, but it's dark. May not cut through a mix. YMMV
If it still won't get loud enough, it's probably broken. - Steve Conner

Ok , cool. SO I only want the pickups in series when I put the pickups out of phase with each other. I have an old '64 mustang that a friend wired up for me(in 1977) with 2 humbuckers, a 3way pickup switch and two mini switches, one to go from parallel to series and the other to put the pickups out of phase. It sounds killer with the pickups in series and out of phase. Long story short, I bought a new body for the '64 neck and want to just have one switch that will put the pickups out of phase in series.

Got it. What options do you want in the complete package? And what controls do you have available?

As I imagine it, one 3-way switch (A/both/B) like standard on a HH guitar won't get you series operation. And you're stuck with either in-phase or out-of-phase. A DPDT switch gives you the ability to reverse phase, but that's an additional switch. Yet another switch would be required to go from series to parallel pickups. For an example of how complicated it gets in a hurry for just a few variable, look at a picture of Brian May's Red Special to see how many switches he's got to select pickups with. Yowsa!!

edit: I just scratched around on some paper, can't come up with a more elegant solution. Maybe someone else can?

I have my old mustang wired with two humbuckers , a 3way for pickup selection, a mini dpdt for phase, and a dpdt for series parallel. So you don't think I can just use one switch to go from parallel in phase to series out of phase.?

For each switch you remove, you would lose options.

For most of my Franken-guitars, I've settled on the "superswitch": based on the fender 5-way, but with several ganged switches. 4-pole, 5-throw to be exact. It does a lot of what I want. A DPDT can't get you halfway...
