  • Small post tuner options for vintage Guild?

I picked up a project 1956 Guild X-50. One of the tuners is missing the string post (the shaft that sticks through the headstock) and gear, but the plate and shaft with the button are still there. This has small diameter string posts. I think they are refered to as 7/32" but I measure them at about 0.21" These also have hex post bushings. My preference would be to replace the post and gear and use the original bits otherwise, but at this point looking for anything with the correct shaft diameter. Looking at ads for vintage tuners they never list enough dimension info to know if they would work.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

This one looks to have a similar string post. You could use maybe just the post and gear. See pictures with measurements. A bit expensive for a single tuner, but you probably don't have a ton of options.

          Did you check StewMac?
          Very expensive, though.

All of the modern Waverly tuners seem to have 0.25" posts

My son and I did a little bit of redneck engineering and modified a string post from a parts bin tuner to work in this Guild. He chucked the post into the drill press and used a flat file and some sandpaper to get the diameter down to where it would fit in the bushing. It maybe took him 10 minutes. It works just as well as the originals. I think if I looked for a gear with a different color and the right kind of screw you would never notice the mismatch. It's a player-grade guitar anyway, but it plays and sounds great so I'm totally happy with the way the project is going.
