Here is a classic example of why its good to have an LCR meter dangling from the ceiling at all times. I'm working on the current incarnation of my PAFs and did some sound samples of the neck which I've been working on for too long now :-) Listening to the sound samples it sounded too dark, and jamming with it the other nite it seemed awful muddy, so thought I'd better pull it out and see whats going on. Well the DC resistance was right on target no problem there. Then I measured both coils on the LCR meter with poles and slugs installed and also with them removed. I measured directly from the leads, not the shielded lead coming off the pickup. Nothing looked wrong there, one coil wasn't immenseley darker than the other, though do notice the screw pole side is darker than the slugs and also meausred on my '62 Patent the same thing happens, guess the keeper helps dumb the screw side down more than the slugs, whatever.
I looked at my notes of all the incarnations of this particular pickup and the AC resistance always has been about 10.5 AC ohms. NOw its reading almost 12! So, I looked again at my readings off each coil, the AC resistance and so I added them up and got 10.5. WTF is going on??? So I undsoldered the shielded short piece of braided Gibson type lead off the pickup, which is about 3 inches long and hooked up the LCR meter to that with nothing connected to it......TWO HENRIES!!! Bingo! Too many solderings and unsolderings, installing and removing from the test guitar, the insulation was starting to fail and loading down the pickup, case solved. These meters can be damn useful sometimes......
