  • neck pickup flip

I've been messing with my neck hum to get a clearer tone so I flipped it around ala Peter Green and I have to say it does sound a bit less bassy and clearer, but the in-between position (neck and bridge pu together) doesn't quite have the same quack.
I like the tone of the neck pu flipped, but I'm missing the quack of the in-between position. If I rotate the magnet 180 degrees will the in-between position be out of phase? How can I get my in-between position to sound right?
Or, is that part of the sacrifice of flipping the neck pu.

    thanks,
    dre

Two things you can do to clear up your neck pickup slightly, I've found, are (1) rob a set of pole screws from a burstbucker - they're a higher carbon steel than most others (duncan, dimarzios etc) and they will thin out some of the mud as the magnetic permeability is lower , and/or (2) you can try clipping off approx. 1/4" of the pole screw length (you want them about flush w/ the underside of the baseplate) which will also slightly brighten it up. I have found that either/or will basically retain the same middle position tone.

yes, filp the magnet to get the out-of-phase sound.
