I think a lot got lost in translation with that guy. I think he was on the up and up. I have no idea what his motivation would be to pawn magnets that were not from his own source. He even produced a P.O. from a magnet maker in China.

From what he told me he his father was very ill and had expertise in magnetics and as a sort of father son project they recreated a vintage Gibson bar magnet they had. I think he wanted to see it successful as a way to give his father some satisfaction for his efforts. He said he was sad about how the thread devolved into a flame session. I think his prices were steep but I think he thought he had something very good to offer. They are not a typical Alnico grade but I know there are many vintage magnets out there that do not fit neatly into any Alnico grade. His story may have been an elaborate con in order to sell magnets but I just don't think that was the case.

Yeah I hold the same opinion, but the truth is that formula they forced the magnet maker to use against the advice they were given, is a flop. My samples lost the charge on one side after about 3 months of just sitting in its envelope, I am sure glad I didn't buy any of those, and he was very obnoxious, plus his price was just ridiculous, I wonder how many did buy those and are now finding they have pickups that are dead or only one coil barely working. I think his story was legit, its sad his investment has turned to dust...

What would be the easiest way for a person without any gauss meter to check them? I have two magnets (IIRC they are the shorties) installed in a guitar and I haven't noticed any degradation but if it was gradual maybe I wouldn't. It still sounds like humbuckers to me.

I did the very scientific test of sticking a screwdriver tip to the screws and the pull seemed nominal. But my screwdriver was not calibrated.

They will last much longer IN a pickup because they are contacting iron poles and keeper. this will keep them from degrading way slower than just sitting out like mine were....but they eventually will lose the charge and you'll know because your pickup will lose its power noticably

Could it be that the magnets were sliced up incorrectly at the factory so that some were 90º off when they were finally magnetized for use in guitars. Wouldn't this explain some things?

Personally I tend to hold the magnet over my Prince Albert and estimate the strength by the look on the wife's face
