bases plates: brass vs. nickel

    The technical comparison is very interesting but what does it SOUND like? GuitarPartsUSA is the only one I know with brass baseplates for humbuckers and they are 50mm and 53mm.

    DiMarzio must use them to tame treble, or could it be for some other reason. I've never tried brass with humbuckers.....

      This is where I would argue for a test guitar that had the pickups facing downwards above the strings, such that one could swap out baseplates quickly for comparison purposes.

        Yes. But making the plate very thick might not produce more effect because of the skin effect. Brass at 10 KHz has a skin depth of about 1.3mm, and it increases with decreasing frequency. So a normal baseplate is not affected by the skin depth. So if you make it thinner, it will have less effect; the resistance goes up.

          Yes, it is the sound that matters. But it is good to understand how it works, especially when changing the baseplate can have two effects. It can be hard to figure out what to change by sound alone.

              Mojo has nice covers. GJ does when he has them. Allparts is more spendy. Look at the sticky for the websites...

                  Thanks guys, someone is going to NY and will bring me some mojo nickel silver covers and AlNiCo 2 and 3 rods, things I can't get around here. Their AlNiCo rods sounds good or there are better ones?
