Material for top and bottom PU plates

I was just reading an article on the stew-mac web site about building a pu and the article referred to a fiber material for forming the top and bottom plate of the pickup. Does anyone have a recommendation and source for this material? I was thinking of using some Plexiglas that I had laying around my shop for my first attempt but now I'm wondering if that would be too thick?

You can use anything that's stiff enough and thin enough to leave some room for wire. 1/16" and 3/32" forbon (vulcanized fibre) it the traditional material and it's dirt cheap in big sheets but hideously expensive in small pieces. Many plastics work just fine as does wood, fiberglass PCB, G-10, fish paper, countertop laminate etc.

I use plexi to make my P-90's. it works but you need to make it quite thick. It needs to be from 0.08 to 0.125 to work or the ends of the bobbin flare alot when you put the wire on. If you are making strat pickups then forbon is the best. If you are using P-90's you can make your own but the pre-made bobbins are nice as well.

Besides commercial plastic bobbins, I use printed circuit board, both plain and perforated, and lately card stock.
