I had a read up on your neck jig a while back and found that quite a neat idea. Will that cope with your angled headstock necks or do you resort to a form of oversize radius cutter for that.

Jonson, I originally designed it for only fender style necks. With a longer router bit and spacers under the end pucks you could do an angle headstock. I found that working with my setneck models nice to do the hand carving method, mahogany or spanish cedar is nice to work with.

I do the same myself now and then but as I run a big 55 year old wadkin ls overhead then it makes life easier at my age to do it with a couple of passes. I use to do the same with fingerboards with a set of long long 3/4 cutters ground like applecores to the radii I use but they were stolen some time back in a theft and have never got round to replacing them. I see Gil is making a lot of use of his overhead now and it seems to have sped him up. Good luck with the guitars Bill and report back on the filtertrons and let us know how you get on..

Not heard of Tom before but just had a look and yes they are pretty and very clean. Slightly Maton in the shape but one to give an LP a run for it's money. There are some good guys out there which is good to see.

Alrighty, the filtertron covers have arrived from CrazyParts in Germany. Only needs a bit of modding to work. I'm also goin g to make my own tailpiece, I just couldn't find something I liked.

I've not known that. It has been said by a few guys over the years that is the case but the bobbins are smaller and closer together and I wound mine the same as one I took apart years ago which only had just over 2k per coil and a lot less wire.

From my memory, your bobbin dimensions are a little off. I’ll have to dig out my Gretsch notes or re-measure one of my bobbins from the 60s. I’ll post here, unless someone beats me to it.

BTW I'm told Angela Instruments (NOS FilterTron bobbins & baseplates) are out of stock. I think these were leftover stock from the late seventies or 80s and not sure if the bobbins were dimensionally the same as earlier versions. Reportedly, Angela Instruments bought these from Duke Kramer. I bought a replacement back for a "Double Anniversary" from him at least 18 years ago. Unfortunately he passed some time ago. Duke was very helpful to me during my restoration of that guitar.

I'll leave that one to you Jim if I can as the one I took apart years ago is no longer around. The pair I made for that Billy Bo clone I did, I used standard bucker bobbins and took 1/16th in off the inner edges which lined them up with the cover slots. I'm fairly sure though that the 1/4 in gap in the height is a fraction taller but as I don't keep notes I have a fairly good memory box then I'm not gonna say for sure. Seems daft that over the years i've collected tons of data yet never written anything down myself.

Overall bobbin length – 2 7/16”

Note: I could not quickly find my empty bobbin or previous notes (need to get more organized as they are here somewhere), so these dimensions are taken through the semi-transparent white bobbin. Hope this helps.
