I've bought a set of Mean90s and boy was I surprised by their tone! They're the closest vintage P-90 sounding p'ups in humbucker format I've ever tried.

They're A LOT BETTER than my Gibson P-94s, and that without even considering their cost (a set of GFS Mean90s cost less than a single Gibson P-94 and that's including shipping cost to ITALY!)

I haven't tried another GFS p'ups but I've bought some hardware from'em and the quality was better than expected. They're sure are offering a lot of bang for the buck!

      Cheap Tele pickup

OK, I got the cheap dual rail Tele lead pickup today.

It's actually very nice looking. Especially for $19. The rails are very shiny. I'm guessing some kind of type 400 ferritic stainless. They are flat across the top, but slope down on the ends.

It's made from black forbon, has some kind of Alnico magnet, and a brass baseplate. Seems to be wax potted, as there is a little wax residue on the baseplate.

It has 4-conductor wiring and measures 11.33K in series.

I'm going to try and get it installed today, after I finish a Floyd install and grind and polish on an Ibanez bass. Oh, they can wait, let me install it now...

I'll report back with sound clips.

Here's some photos of the pickup.

OK, here's the report on the cheap ass Tele pickup.

I'd have to say that I like it. It sounds the same as the stacked pickup I made that was in there, but louder. I was hoping for a louder tone, but still like a Tele.

My guitar never had a real Tele pickup in it, so the rout was made to fit the Bill lawrence pickup, which is more compact. It's like a Strat pickup with mounting ears. It lacks the big flang/plate of the real thing. I routed the regular tele shape, but it was a little small.

So I had to make some minor adjustments to the cavity with a sharp chisel. When I get a chance I'm going to rout it a big larger, and I may have to go deeper, but it might just be hanging up on the walls.

So it's closer to the strings than I would want.

It's very sensitive to string heights, but that would likely vanish if I could adjust it a bit lower.

        So here's some sound clips:

        Clean Tele

        Dirty Tele

The clean clip is just the bridge pickup. In the dirty clip I start out with the bridge, and then switch the middle in, and then the neck/bridge combo. You can hear the string touch the rail at one point.

The guitar needs to be set up again, since I had to remove the saddles and the bridge. I put on new strings, but it's a bit out of tune.

        Not bad for under $20!
