Yeah, the lacquer was used on the raw bobbin assembly before winding (they would tape the solder points off to prevent fumes from forming when the iron hit the eyelets). Just a dry coat. But the potting is no doubt shellac based, not lacquer as the alcohol will not soften lacquer. Elektrisola still sells this wire. It is called "self-Bonding". They manufacture this potting solution on the wire. It is activated by both heat or dipping in ethanol or methanol (alcohol).
