What is a extech instrument and how is it used in pickup making?

Man thats a dumb question! Just kidding :-) The Extech is an LCR meter, it reads inductance, capacitance, and AC resistance. It is most useful in the design of pickups, it lets you see what happens when you change your winding amount or change metal parts in a humbucker to some other alloy etc. It has two test frequencies 120hz and 1000hz. If you are just a hobbyist it won't be of much use. I have found mine most useful when working on new pickup designs to see what the different variations measure as a benchmark. Bottom line though is itis limited in that it doesnt read up around 10khz and there are some things in that range that change that just don't show up on the meter at all. You have to use your ears for that. Its also useful to make sure that pickups you sell are basically the same so you don't send out pickups that all sound different. IT can also help you spot a short in the coils or other similar problems.....
