  • Source for better springs

Does anyone have a source for better pickup adjustment springs than what our main suppliers have.

I include screws and springs with each pickup, but i find that most folks don't care for the thin wire and elongated ones that GJ sells. Any vintage-style spring sources?

I'm looking at some companies, but I'm wondering whether someone already has a source.

    ...

Mojo has nice ones, not vintage correct like StewMac's long ones, these are nice and stiff and sized for long leg bucker plates...

If all else fails, go to Century Springs (http://www.centuryspring.com/)

They have 300 million springs in stock and 35 thousand designs available! They're here in Los Angeles, an old time company. I've been to their main warehouse/sales counter and it's unbelievable. You'd swear that there were 10 million springs just in the bins in the waiting area. And if they actually don't have the size you want, they'll make it for you. You can get their catalog and order anything from it, even in small quantities.

I wonder what gauge of wire that they're using? Does anyone have a spec and an actual image for the vintage springs so I can present to a manufactuer. I will go in on a custom batch with other folks if anyone is interested. Or if someone can provide the wire gauge and correct vintage specs, I will get a batch and sell some to other folks here.

$.44 and $.30 respectfullly, to me is a little ridiculous for the cost of a small spring.... it's these little things that you need to find ways to cut costs . They should cost .03-.05 per spring IMO...and of course depending on volume.

or if Compression Spring carries them, maybe we can buy some in bulk to take advantage of the volume discount.

We ought to be able to characterize the springs we already have on various pickups.

          The following information is needed:

Spring OD - measure with a caliper. This assumes that the spring shape is a cylinder. With conical springs, both ODs are needed.

Spring wire diameter - measure with a caliper.

Spring length when not loaded - measure with a caliper or ruler.

Number of coils per inch - count them.

End treatment - tight coil, ground flat, bend into a tension loop, et al. A photo may be the best approach here.

Spring wire material - plated carbon steel or stainless steel. Color usually gives it away. Also, carbon steel springs will usually stick to a magnet more strongly than will stainless steel.

This information will allow one to sort through Century Spring's collection, and/or to order springs.

One can also specify a spring by unstressed length, minimum length (when coils touch one another), diameter, and spring rate (pounds force to shorten (or lengthen) the spring by one inch).
