  • Formvar humbuckers, anyone?

Anybody wound some buckers with formvar? If so, how does the sound differ from PE?

You just have to try it for yourself. I tried it and I don't sell pickups made with it, they sound ok I guess. You get a fatter coil which softens it up more than I personally like....

Is that heavy formvar, or regular?
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

Double-build, which is "heavy" according to MWS. I'm a formvar virgin but I just bought a spool because I get a lot of requests for formvar Strat pu's but was curious how it would sound in a 'bucker.

I've never used it. I was tempted to buy a roll one day. I do have some heavy build 45AWG SPN though. That's an odd combination!

I have used it and it sounds great. You have to pull more tension on the formvar than the PE because the insulation is slick compared to PE which will automatically give you a softer build if you try and keep the tension the same. Once you get the tension right you won't tell a difference between PE and formvar given that the insulation build is the same.

But it's not the same build. The formvar I have is double, the PE single. I figure that will put a lower limit on the number of turns I can get on a bobbin but was wondering what else.

In that case it will build up more and yes it will sound completely different.

                          ...

It will make the coil significantly fatter, the fatter a coil you have the softer it starts to sound, the smaller the coil is the more of the coil that is immersed in the magnetic field where the hot action is, so hotter quicker tone.....

Might be interesting to make one coil formvar and the other PE. We'll see how it goes...
