  • Acceptable Tolerance on AC resistance or Q

I was wondering what is a reasonable tolerance on this....

Occasionally, I will get a coil that reads way low and obviously has a short, but sometimes for example 9 out of 10 Strat coils will measure Q of 2.7, and one will measure 2.6.

I am handwinding, but if I can get 9 of 10 to measure exactly the same at 2.7, I am trying to figure out if the one at 2.6 has a flaw, or is just "acceptable tolerance".

You can't spot coil shorts with Q readings. Use your AC resistance readings, find what a good strat coil reads, then if you get one where ACR goes up noticably you have a coil short or a short to the poles.....
