I need some paper tape! 3/4 in, and 1/4. Seriously, I need some good stuff! I used to use the GJ cloth, but its so wierd, sometimes it sticks good, sometimes it trips out. Im more than willing to by bulk.....I'll use it.
Thanks
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
well we all use it when we can. The thing is, we've all got thoroughly fed up with trying to get 3M to manufacture it again.
there is one option though. It's essentially photographer's masking tape. It has to be completely opaque for photographers so it's expensive. However, there are other manufacturers out there such as Toyo. this stuff is made on huge rolls so, providing you have a large enough order, you can get them to cut it to size.
I found a company in Canada selling it but i couldn't get a response from them. Now I can't remember what they were called.
I got a "New Stuff" flyer from AllParts recently and it said they have it too...that is if it is in stock. Seems like nothing that I ever order from them is.
Here are the AllParts part numbers:
6mm x 59ft: PU 6920-000
12mm x 59ft: PU 6922-000
Yeah, the stew mac stuff is nice, but expensive for so little. I really am looking for the 12mm stuff, comparable to the gibson paper. Lots of guys prefer paper over cloth? I just need it!! Thats how it goes though, Im learning to buy in advance even if there is'nt a demand, cause 3 months down the line, someone will want it, and I wont have it. I'm checking that painters site........
It's crepe so it'll have a crinkly surface. I have used it but you have to work the crinkles out. It may aslo have a matte finish but it looks reasonable with some wax on.
yes. I was eye balling that one and thought it would be a better choice but it didn't come in the 1/4 inch size. I'll look for some of that specific type from another vendor.
I'm always on the look out for alternatives to the Stewmac stuff and still trying to find that "perfect" tape.
Oh my God!!! Yeah, the tape looked like the right stuff too!! WTF!!! Spence, did you see their other types? They have photograph paper too. Can this be used to wrap the bobbins? The Crepe was for the Finish. Thanks Kevin for the Info too. You know, we are a big family here, as we all share the same bad luck!! "07 is going to be different though. Any supplies over there in the UK for Solid Nickle sheeting?
Yeah I ordered yesterday and got the same email from them this am , if you are selling something wouldn't you get of your arse and find out when it's going to be available ? Obviously not.........

It's the photographic tape I was ordering. So dissappointing. However, I'm awaiting a reply from a firm in the UK that can custom make masking tapes. I wouldn't expect a reply for a few days while they try to find out what I'm asking for but who knows...
As for nickel sheet suppliers in the UK, it's better to search for German Silver sheet on the web. i have looked into it in the past. It is available. here's a link to a firm in the Republic of Ireland :
MAn, I have been working on these covers and baseplates for over 2 yrs. The inlaws own a stamping plant and do some work for the automotive industry. At this point, the material can be punched for production. Ahh hell,,,you got mail......
I ordered both of these to test ... 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch widths. I thought that I would try the 1/2 inch anyway even though I would have to custom cut/fit. I was trying to avoid that step.
Below is a quote from Tim Mills from Bare Knuckle pickups. He says he uses PVC tape to wrap the windings.
My question is:
Other than using paper to follow vintage specs, are there any other reasons why PVC wouldn't be a problem to use to cover the windings? If I recall a thread a few months back, there was a problem using certain tapes because it would impact the magnetic field of the pickup. Can someone refresh my memory. Using my meter, what readings would I check for in the tape?
QUOTE:
"I’ve gone to great lengths to source as much of the original materials as possible, but I will use modern materials when I think they serve a better purpose. For instance, I use PVC tape to cover the windings because it’s easier to work with than the original paper stuff, which can be a real pig. But if somebody wants the original paper tape, then I’ll use it!”
