The effort seems to have petered out, but the idea still lives.
A lot of people would prefer a handheld or bench instrument with buttons.
This approach to the problem uses simple hardware that you need to make, and puts most of the intelligence in the computer, which you already need for other things.
A stand alone meter for measurement at many frequencies seems impractical. How will you store and plot the data? How will you find the circuit model that matches the measurements?

Now I also claim that even at somewhat lower frequencies, a humbucker coil model needs two inductors and two resistors. Not everyone believes that.

The only clone I ever made was a copy of the Maestro Bass Brassmaster. Everyone said that schematic was wrong when using GGG circuit boards and R.G. Keen original layout, but I discovered the problem in the original schematic. (pat myself on the back) Oh and some MXR Distortion Pluses back in the day lol
I prefer to try and come up with my own stuff. I Can't believe people have this whole business revolving around the same Tube Screamer mods that Gus Smalley came up with back in the early 90's, and everyone acts like it's their idea.
I agree it's not cool to steal other people's ideas to make money off of.Last edited by David Schwab; 08-09-2009, 03:36 PM.It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

Sorry, couldn't help it but that is what forums are all about, discussion, sharing knowlege, and absolutely everyone from time to time incorporates anothers ideas onto their own work, it is what it is.
IMHO DIYstomp and Freestomp are no different than here.

I don't make copies of pickups, except for a few humbuckers for my own use, and even then I'm not trying to make them sound like a PAF or whatever, just using existing parts. I make most of the parts in my pickups, and I'm not following other people's designs.
Personally I think it's more fun creating new things, which is why I also don't make Jazz Bass copies, or try to sound like what ever the latest popular trend in music is.
But your average player wants pseudo vintage stuff, or the same thing regurgitated into another form over and over again. I have no interest in that. I've never been into that whole copy cat thing. Some people have no originality.
If I could, I'd smack every guy with a Jazz Bass and SVT in the head with a wiffle bat and tell them to think for themselves! It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

it is an unusual work that he has protected from facile copying.
It's not as if it was a Tube Screamer variant.
In the case of guitar pickups, they're as old as dirt and little new has been added
since the end of the Second Industrial Revolution, except in trivial matters of taste.
Most of the existing pickup patents are of very dubious provenance, to put it mildly.
In terms of obviousness, it's a waste of time to protect a pickup design,
even the truly innovative ones.
An aggressive class action lawsuit would blow Rickenbacker and/or Dimarzio out of
the water, or at least make shut up about toaster style pickups and Vintage Noiseless
patents.
Guitarists?
Organize to mount and finance a lawsuit?
(smacks forehead with palm)
What was I thinking?!
IMHO DIYstomp and Freestomp are no different than here.
When someone has created something obviously different
and has protected that uniqueness from duplication,
then there is cause for concern.
