  • 3 pole p90!

Hello all, I'm brand spankin new here and to the world of pickup building so please forgive any stupid questions. This may be covered in another post but the search didn't reveal quite what i was looking for, let me know if I missed something. Now that the n00b disclaimer is out of the way I can begin my questions.

I recently built a 3 string cigar box guitar and I've decided what it really needs to be awesome is a pickup or two. No, I don't want to do the simple piezo pickup glued to the sounding board, I think I can do better than that.

I came across a site where a man put together a p90 style pickup for his and it's what I'd like to do. Here is the picture:

He says that he mentions he used a book from Jason Lollar and based it off a cut-in-half p90 design but this book is out of print and I can't find it in any local library. I can't figure out the structure and how the magnets are placed. I get the basics of it but not much more.

How tall should this bobbin be and how to the pole pieces fit into it all? How are the magnets placed? The bottom picture isn't exactly clear on that.

One last thing, can I wind 2 p90's reversed from each other to create a humbucker? I think 2 of those would look awesome and a 3 way switch could could split them.

    Thank you, everyone, in advance.

You could very easily make a P-90 style pickup like that. Id consider ditching that magnet configuration and just use two bar magnets. On the neck put south facing in, and on the bridge put north facing in. And absoluely you can have them act as a humbucker. On the neck pickup use the start wire for the hot lead, and on the bridge use the end wire for the hot lead. As long as you have the leads swapped and the magnets reversed you got yourself a bucker of hum.

A P-90 has a bobbin is 1/4" tall in the center and you would want 1/16th of an inch of plastic on either side of the pole screws. This would make your coil approx 0.25w x 0.25t, and the length is up to you. Lollar uses a plexiglass core glued between two pieces of forbon. I made a bunch of them and dont use them. PM me your address and i'll send you some .
