    HA! Nice.

I e-mailed my doc an hour ago.. He was going to x-ray tommorow, but I told him that the MM5HB will be arriving tommorow and could he hold off a day or two.. he said "no prob".. Im ITCHIN for the results!

From what I have read the HB's are split coils, like a P-bass pickup (Two small coils). My belief is that the DW is two full coils + three rows of poles.
From what I've seen using magnetic paper, the HB pickups have two side-by-side coils, which run almost the entire length of the pickup shell. It looked like a typical Bartolini or SGD coil-pickup. The coils weren't split like a P-bass pickup. This was true on my MM5HB pickup (which I just sold) and my M40HB pickup (which is still in my possession).

This is the reason why the HB-armature soapbar pickups which were 1.25" wide (i.e. HB4250) had the screw mounting holes in different locations from the Wide- and Narrow-armature pickups (i.e. SB4250, JB4250). Because the dual-coil assembly in the HB-armature was just too wide to allow for the screw mounting holes on the long edges of the pickups, the mounting holes were moved to the short ends (a la Bartolini). I've also seen other photos of HB-armature soapbar pickups of other lengths, which had screw mounting holes in the MIDDLE (i.e. between the coils). That looked a bit weird.

This wasn't an issue for the "M" (i.e. EMG size) pickup shapes, since the extra 0.25" of shell width allowed the holes to stay in the same locations.

I can't seem to get the Internet Wayback Archive working at the moment, but I believe I remember text on the original "MM" webpage saying that the "DN", "DW" and "DV" models actually had two independent pickup armatures inside one shell. I gather that this was different from a HB-armature with its two coils, which (according to the scans posted here) were each narrower than the Narrow-armature coil.

        Listed here is:

One popular custom dual-coil combination was the "DN" variant, which had two separate "narrow" aperture pickup coils inside the housing. Lane compared these pickups to being like having two "Jazz" style pickups in the same body. Another popular combination was the "DW" variant, which had two separate wide-aperture pickup coils inside the housing. Lane compared this variant to having two "P" style pickups mounted in close proximity. There were also some reports of a "DV" model (nicknamed "dual-voice") which had one coil of each aperture type. Information on the relative distribution of these three variants seems to be scarce.
        I'm assuming you wrote that?

You can fit a whole lot of stuff in a MM shell! I can fit one of my wide aperture humbuckers and a jazz size humbucker in the same case.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

Yep, I wrote that from memory. The Wayback machine is working now. Here's what it shows:

"They are available in hb (humbucker,) n (narrow,) w (wide,) dw (dual wide,
2 wide's in one case,) dn (dual narrow, 2 narrow's in one case,)
dv (dual voice, 1 narrow and 1 wide in one case,) and sc, (split coil.)

The MM 5 dw is only available with Tab's"

However, the Wayback machine didn't cache all the pages on the site for some reason.

I don't doubt it at all. I'd love to buy one when they're ready.

          • I used a MMdv in a bass back in 99. It indeed had the wide and narrow coils with separate outputs. I hooked them up via a blend pot. Sounded great! Still have four (glued up as two humbuckers? Not sure if it was factory or a user mod - I got them off Ebay a long time ago) JXL pickups that I might use one day.

Can you compare the MM4DV with the DW and the HBSC?
Which one has what as a recognizable (peak) characteristic (bass, mids, highs...)?

              • Well bad news today everyone... The doc called me from the Radiology department and said the medical X-ray was not powerful enough to penetrate the pickup.. He said Im going to have to find an industrial X-ray company.. dang. I'll have the pickups back in my hand today and will start googling now.

                • Somehow I'm not surprised to hear that. Perhaps a welding shop that does pressure vessels would have the necessary equipment but I bet it won't be cheap.
Did the good doctor try longer exposure times or multiple exposures on the same film?
I have a casual friend in town who teaches radiation technicians on all the latest equipment and I had asked him once about it and he had offered. What I do know is that refinements in radiology have reduced exposure and risk over the decades so that todays xray machines probably put out a fraction of what they might have when your Dad last tried this trick.

Sorry it was a bass I built for someone so I haven't seen it in 10 years. Can't remember the sound that well, I just remember liking it...

                        • belwar, if you do not find any industrial x-ray, your doc could try with multiple exposures on same sheet like David King mentioned, it might work.
In meanwhile can you make a magnetic view of the pup from all the sides so for now we could see the magnetic fields?

Well, it certainly is a way to see what's going on... as a last resort.

That's not the tools I would use... but that was the funniest picture!

Just don't plan on using the pickup after that.

Yeah of course, it fit there in an interesting way

That's an EMG-SA. It gave its life to science!
