  • pickup magnets question

what will happen if i used big rectangle magnet to cover all six strings instead of 6 cylindrical magnets ?

    thx

You effectively have a a blade pickup .. such as this example:

I dont know alot about blade pickups, but I believe the blade is usually made from steel, with a magnet below the pickup.

      thx for fast answering
i know nothing about blade pickups XD
but what i meant was using thicker rectangle magnet about 6mm thickness instead of this blade magnet

about the pic u sent :
after searching i found blade pickups with single blade and another with 2 blades but with 2 coils for hum.. in the pic u sent the pickup has 2 blades but there is one coil inside is that right?

and physically i just want to know the sound differences if i used twin blades magnet , single magnet or big magnet like 5 mm or more

        ....

There historically have been several pickups made with a humbucker type magnet flipped up on its side as a magnet/blade pickup. The Kay "speed bump" pickups are one that use really big magnets that way, and one of the P13 versions used a regular humbucker magnet flipped on its side as a blade. Single blade pickups have a kind of honky horn tone to them that I really like alot. The Charlie Christian pickup is a famous one but is a steel blade powered by a magnet or magnets on the bottom.

Here is a live demo of a single blade humbucker sized pickup I make based on the Charlie Christian pickup (very loosely anyway) this might give you an idea of what they sound like, at least in jump blues :-)

The main soloist is using this pickup.

Great video! I never saw Kessel clean shaven before.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

ohhhh i like the first blues guitar but i hate the background drums hahahaha
and the other guitar reminds me with 70s guitars its cool
oh i lost the subject XD
if the two guitars has blade pickups then i can tell that the first one uses some kind of distortion or gain raising i actually dont know and if this was blade pick up so i like it and im gonna build it at once but there is a little problem , hmmm i have weak magnet and i cant revive it right now so i think bigger size will be suitable for this pick up please could u see this pic for me and tell us what sound may come out from these four designs no need to get mp3s or videos if u r busy , just say ( this produce clean soft sound or say this produce some kind of distorted sound or bassy sound... etc) some kind of these descriptions
and im not gonna make a humbucker cuz i dont have time to wind 2 coils for each pickup but if u have the urge u can talk about the humbuckers XD just like (nickle back says) lol ohhhh i forgot the pic and sorry im not a good painter

              thx
