If you don't care about hum cancelation, then it doesn't matter, and if they are both North or both South, it wont affect the tone at all.

If you want to hum cancel, the magnetic poles have to be opposite so that the reverse polarity coils will sum the signals in phase with each other.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

      toothpicks...

When you have a magnet wire riding up on the coil like that all you do is take a toothpick and run it around the coil between the coil and the end of the wire and guide it down to the bottom of the pickup. They are one of my most used "tools" around here. The wire won't break, just be careful when you do it, also makes for a nice tight wire to the eyelet..

        Good eye there mate.

So onto the neck pickup tonight.

Always best practice to make that last turn flat to the bobbin before soldering, anything else is just fixing an error.

          ...

Amen to that. There is a youtube video of Lindy Fralin winding a pickup for a guy while he waits, you'll note the last few turns are done flush with the start of the wind.....

It's a "stroke counter", which implies that it will not work with continuous rotation. I would ask the seller, and also get the make and model and look up the manufacturer's data.

This is what it says for a desc.,

                "Model: LB-5
Turn once 360 degree in clockwise for add one figure
Turn once 360 degree in anti-clockwise for subtract one figure"

I assumed it meant if you keep turning it would keep counting.

Not clear. Better ask a direct question.

                    Well I got a responce,

                    Hi Bill,

I'm not clear your system, but these can be used as a continuous counter mounted on a shaft.
                    Best regards,
                    Carie
So I could give it a try.

Yes. She is saying fairly clearly that continuous rotation will work.
