Good winder deal on Ebay....

These winders are built like tanks, this one only needs some cord repair I think. I have the non-LED display version of this one and its what Seymour winds his hand wounds on. I have 2 of them actually, they do reverse wind, will count backwards, easy maintenance. These winders usually sell for up to $1500 used....

I think the digital ones sell for about $2200. Forgot to mention it also has auto shut off for wind counts. I have no idea how to use the digital one, shouldn't be too hard to figure out, you can get a manual from Adams Maxwell....

There was a nice one with the 7" programable traverse that sold about a month ago for $1277 or so. It still seems a little bit kluged together and the price is crazy compared to what Elepro is putting together.

I saw that one, actually its a really solid unit, but I have the manual for it and you can only program in 32 different traverse passes or something like that, so it was too limited for me, though if someone gave me one I wouldn't complain :-) That guy got a terrific deal. I noticed that those Lane pickups are wound with that unit. My own home brew auto traverse beats everything out there, its dead simple low tech and costs about about $100 if that, anything dies on it, replacement is off the shelf parts, nothing over $30. Programming is stupid simple and it will write its own programs. The more complicated something gets the bigger problems they can have. Doing this full time I can't afford one day of an over complex machine going down. I have a duplicate traverse ready to go if anything freaks. Mine runs on old PC's SoundmasterG got me for cheap, thats all they do is run code and nothing else. It will do stuff no commercial winders will do, the software isn't even meant for coils, which turned out to be a big plus in the end.

I'm sure Ele will come up with something cool, but all you really need is a Volkswagen, something that will move the wire back and forth in any fashion you want, the KISS principle..You really don't need the traverse and the winding motor synched for making pickups for instance, way overkill unless you're winding RF coils or something, I can see a big downside to having them synched as well. I'm sitting on my design, maybe someday might make them to sell, but too much trouble teaching someone how to use it.

The simplest traverse is setting your spool across the room from the winder and letting the wire find it's own level. I haven't tried it yet but it's supposed to work. If you have enough hanging in the air the weight of it becomes your tensioner. You just don't want folks or pets barging across your winder room.

I read one that Leo Fender showed a guitar player that the wire would guide itself if you were the right distance from the coil. When I was hand guiding with fatter wire this would happen now and then. Kind of risky to trust though, the wire can decide it wants to stay on one side and oops....

I have to say $799.00 seems too much for that winder. I got a heavy duty Geo Stevens winder with a pedal for under $400.00. This kind of used specialty industrial equipment is dirt cheap at surplus shops right now. There is a lot of orphaned equipment due to the economy and I bet you could probably find this very winder for half this price at an industrial surplus shop.

Maybe, but I've seldom seen them go for this low anywhere, surprised it hasn't sold yet. It has a damaged cord, if I had some spare change right now I'd pick it up, just needs some splicing to fix it. This is their current winder, yes its only a motor, that will reverse and has a count shut off, but they really are way overbuilt. I've been using mine for five years and the brushes aren't hardly worn at all. This one will also immediately interface with their traverse, nothing else needed. Duncan likes them, you can see him using his in the Premier Guitar videos they did at his shop. I bet the guy would take $650 for it. You could do just as well to get a DC motor and build something yourself probably. I'm not a big fan of their company's customer service, but I just love these little winders, very compact and reliable.
